Trainer and utility aircraft

Four aircraft records close this domain. LASTA is a fully aerobatic piston trainer built to FAR Part 23 loads and quoted at 1205 kg maximum take-off mass. LASTA TP is the turboprop development, with a 450 hp engine, ejection seats and an optional ordnance payload of 400 kg. SOVA is a single-engine four-seat low-wing aircraft of semi-monocoque metal construction for initial training and pilot selection. HAWK 5 is a five-seat gyroplane whose rotor is always in autorotation. Every record lists masses, speeds and a ceiling or maximum operating altitude; endurance is quoted on LASTA, LASTA TP and SOVA, while HAWK 5 gives a maximum range of about 315 nmi (580 km) instead.

Hawk 5 five-seat gyroplane

A five-seat gyroplane with an engine-driven pre-rotation system that allows jump take-offs and runway-independent operation, whose rotor is always in autorotation for safety in the event of engine failure.

LASTA basic trainer aircraft

A fully aerobatic piston-engine aircraft for initial and basic pilot training, with low take-off and landing speeds and an error-forgiving design, built to FAR Part 23 aerobatic-category loads in its basic version and utility-category loads in its armed version.

How airframes are specified in tender documents

All four records give a maximum take-off or gross mass, a speed figure, a rate of climb and a service ceiling or maximum operating altitude. LASTA and SOVA are the fullest: wing span, overall length and height, empty or dry mass, maximum level speed, stall speed, take-off and landing distances, endurance, engine configuration, maximum continuous power and propeller type. LASTA TP adds engine power, stall speed, cruise speed, flying height, take-off and landing lengths, flight duration, range and load factors, but no airframe dimensions. HAWK 5 gives seats, power, gross and empty mass, fuel capacity, cruise speed, range, rate of climb and maximum operating altitude. The airworthiness category and its load limits appear on LASTA, and load factors on LASTA TP.

What separates the four airframes

LASTA appears twice, as the basic trainer and as the TP turboprop development; SOVA and HAWK 5 each stand alone. Maximum take-off mass runs from 1200 kg on SOVA to 1720 kg on HAWK 5. Quoted speeds run from a 222 km/h cruise on HAWK 5 and 230 km/h maximum level on SOVA to 400 km/h on LASTA TP, and endurance from 3.5 hours on LASTA through more than four hours on LASTA TP to 4.2 hours at economy speed on SOVA.

Questions about this equipment

Do these records mention armament provisions?

Three do. The LASTA record distinguishes an aerobatic basic version from an armed version in the utility category. LASTA TP lists two additional wing pylons and an ordnance payload raised from 200 kg to 400 kg. The SOVA record notes optional use for reconnaissance, aerial photography or carriage of weapons.

What sets HAWK 5 apart from the other three?

It is the only rotorcraft here. The record describes a five-seat gyroplane with an engine-driven pre-rotation system that allows jump take-offs and runway-independent operation, a maximum gross mass of 1720 kg, a rate of climb over 1500 ft/min and a maximum operating altitude of 16000 ft.
