Night Vision Goggles and Monoculars - Helmet-Mounted, Aviator and Hand-Held
Night vision goggles and monoculars here cover the soldier, the vehicle crew and the aviator. Single-tube goggles PVS-7 and DBNS-7 and the dual-tube NYX binocular are worn on a head mask or helmet, while ANVG and DPNS-9 are helmet-mounted aviator goggles for night flight. The NVG-14B stereoscopic goggle serves combat vehicles and helicopters. Monoculars include ARGUS, ASIO NV, MNP-15 and MNV-1, with ARGUS and MNV-1 listed for hand-held, helmet and weapon use. The HEXAGON day and night camera module extends the same image-intensified technology to standalone and integrated observation.

Specifying goggles and monoculars in a tender
Requirements are usually written around tube generation (Gen II+ or Gen III), field of view (40 deg is standard for the x1 devices here, 45 deg for ASIO NV), diopter and interpupillary adjustment range, battery type and life, weight, immersion and operating temperature. Detection and recognition ranges for a standard man-sized target let bids be compared on a like-for-like basis. For aviation goggles the automatic breakaway threshold, minus blue filter class and altitude of use are also specified.
What varies between models
The main variables are tube count and mounting. Single-tube goggles such as PVS-7 and DBNS-7 are the simpler layout, dual-tube goggles such as NYX and NVG-14B give stereoscopic vision, and monoculars such as ARGUS and MNV-1 trade depth perception for the ability to switch between hand-held, helmet and weapon use. MNP-15 is offered in three tube grades, MNP-15-G2, MNP-15-G3 and MNP-15-XR5, so that performance and budget can be matched. Built-in IR illuminators and automatic brightness control are listed where fitted.
Questions about this equipment
Can the monoculars be mounted on a weapon?
ARGUS and MNV-1 are described as usable hand-held, helmet mounted or weapon mounted, MNV-1 on a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny or Weaver rail, and ASIO NV is offered for short to medium range weapon sighting. The goggles in this group are for observation and navigation and are not weapon sights.
Which goggles are intended for aircrew?
ANVG is a helmet-mounted double-tube Gen III goggle with automatic breakaway and a rear battery pack counterweight, and DPNS-9 mounts on a flight helmet or aviator mask for helicopter cockpits up to 5000 m. NVG-14B is also listed for use in helicopters as well as combat vehicles.
