Laser Warning Systems - Laser Detection and Warning Receivers for Vehicles

Laser warning systems detect when a vehicle is being ranged, designated or illuminated by a laser and alert the crew. LDWS-1 is a single-head system with ten direct receivers covering 360 degrees and one indirect receiver, identifying the source as rangefinder, designator or guided missile and storing the twenty newest readings. LDWS-2020 uses four detector heads and a central unit for hemispherical coverage over CAN bus, adding dazzlers and modulated illuminators to the detected sources. DLO-2020 is a laser irradiation detection module of the same four-head architecture, each module covering 120 degrees in three sectors with direct and indirect detectors from 0.4 to 1.65 um.

What a laser warning tender should state

Tenders define the spectral band to be covered, here 0.4-1.6 um or 0.4-1.65 um, the required azimuth and elevation coverage, the angular resolution of the bearing shown to the crew, the source types to be classified, and the alarm and countermeasure outputs. Vehicle integration is fixed by the data interface, CAN bus for DLO-2020 and LDWS-2020 and digital alarm and countermeasure outputs for LDWS-1, plus supply voltage, mass per head and operating temperature range.

Single head or distributed heads

LDWS-1 concentrates all receivers in one 2.1 kg detector head on a 0.9 kg mounting pole, with a separate 1.5 kg display unit, and runs on 24 VDC or 12 VDC. LDWS-2020 and DLO-2020 each distribute four heads around the vehicle for hemispherical coverage and report to a central control unit over CAN bus, each DLO-2020 module weighing 1.1 kg and drawing 210 mA or less at 24 VDC. Reflected irradiation is listed as detectable for LDWS-2020.

Questions about this equipment

What laser sources are detected?

LDWS-1 identifies laser rangefinders, laser designators or illuminators and laser guided missiles. LDWS-2020 extends the list to rangefinders, target designators, beam riders, dazzlers and modulated illuminators, and DLO-2020 modules cover direct and indirect irradiation from 0.4 um to 1.65 um.

How is the crew warned?

LDWS-1 shows the bearing on a LED display in 36 degree sectors with a 1 degree numerical readout and gives audio and visual alarms plus digital alarm and countermeasure outputs. LDWS-2020 gives light and sound warning through its central control unit.
