Kinetic impact and sound and flash rounds for low-velocity launchers

These six 40x46 mm rounds are recorded for public order and anti-terrorist work rather than for high explosive effect. Three are kinetic: the impulse M05, the lighter impulse M13 P1 and a round loaded with 24 rubber balls of 15 mm, each quoted at about 120 J at 20 m. Two are sound and flash rounds, the M99 with a delay of 1 to 1.5 s and the M01 with an impact fuze, both at 120 dB. The Torment Type I M99 completes the group.

Written by energy and sound rather than by range alone

The kinetic entries are written by energy and precision rather than by range alone: about 120 J at 20 m for all three, with a firing range of 20 to 50 m on the two impulse rounds and a target check of at least 15 balls at 25 m on the rubber ball round. The sound and flash entries are written by sound intensity, 120 dB, and by delay or arming distance.

Mass, velocity and temperature spread across the six

Four designations appear, M05, M13 P1, M99 in two roles and M01, with the rubber ball round listed without one. Round mass runs from 102 g on the M13 P1 to 245 g on the Torment Type I M99, which is the only item here quoting a muzzle velocity of 90 m/s. Operating ranges differ, from -30 to +40 degrees C up to -42 to +63 degrees C.

Questions about these line items

What separates the two impulse rounds?

Mass and precision. The M05 is listed at 115 g with a 65 g grenade and precision of Vp and Vv at 0.15 m or less on a vertical target at 20 m; the M13 P1 is listed at 102 g with a 52 g grenade and 0.1 m or less. Both quote about 120 J at 20 m over 20 to 50 m.

How do the two sound and flash rounds differ?

By how they act and by size. The M99 is a 115 g round of 87 mm with a delay of 1 to 1.5 s; the M01 is a 235 g round of 111 mm with an impact fuze arming at 8 to 35 m, a muzzle velocity of 78 m/s and a firing range of 50 to 400 m. Both quote 120 dB.
