Blank, salute and practice artillery rounds

Five line items cover the non-service natures. Four are blank or salute cartridges, built on the 76 mm M72P1 case, the 76 mm M48 B-1 case, a 105 mm case and the 122 mm M78 case; each is a cartridge case loaded with a propellant charge of NC-01 powder and a black powder No 7 igniter, fired by a KT-series gun primer, with a minimum muzzle safety distance of 100 m. The fifth is the 125 mm training round M17, which carries a training HEAT-T projectile instead of a blank charge.

How blank and practice items are specified in tender documents

A tender annex gives round mass and length, propellant charge mass, igniter mass, cartridge case designation and mass, the primer, the muzzle safety distance and the powder type, then the operating temperature band, the guns the source lists and the number of rounds per case. Noise level appears on three of the four blank records. The training round is specified instead like a service round, with velocity and range.

Designation families and what varies by model

The blank items are distinguished mainly by the cartridge case they are built on and by charge mass: 120 g at 76 mm on the M72P1 and M48 B-1 cases, 270 g at 105 mm, and 350 g in the 122 mm M78 case. Primers follow the weapon, KT M1 on the 105 mm item and KT M71 on the others. The 125 mm M17 stands apart, with a No 12 tracer, base propellant charge M88 and the KT-EU M84 primer.

Questions about this equipment

Do these records state a noise level?

Three of them do. Both 76 mm salute rounds are quoted at a minimum 120 dB and the 122 mm round at a minimum 100 dB. The 105 mm blank record gives a minimum muzzle safety distance of 100 m but no noise figure, and the 125 mm training round states neither.

What separates the two 76 mm entries?

The cartridge case and the gun. One is built on the 76 mm M72P1 case and listed for the gun M42 (ZIS-3) at 1.91 kg round mass; the other is built on the 76 mm M48 B-1 case and listed for the mountain gun M48 B-1 at 2 kg. Both quote 120 g of propellant and a 30 g igniter.
