Multiple rocket launchers (MLRS / MRL), towed and self-propelled

This group lists three multiple rocket launchers. The M16 is a towed 32-tube 107 mm launcher documented with the M15 rocket. TAMNAVA is a modular self-propelled system on an 8×8 truck that accepts launch modules for 122 mm or 262 mm rockets. SUMADIJA is a modular self-propelled long-range system carrying disposable containers of 400 mm or 262 mm rockets. Every sheet states the calibre or calibres, the number of tubes or rockets carried, the maximum range per rocket type, the crew and the launcher or system weight. The two self-propelled systems additionally record INS and GPS navigation, a 25 m remote firing distance and a 120 s preparation time.

How multiple rocket launchers are specified in tender documents

A tender annex for a rocket launcher states the rocket calibre, the number of tubes or containers, the maximum range for each rocket type, the elevation and traverse limits and the laying method. For self-propelled systems it adds the carrier vehicle, wheel formula, crew, system weight and the navigation and fire-control fit. For a towed launcher it records the weight in combat and travelling positions and the towing speeds. The entries in this group list these values as documented for each launcher.

Designation families and what varies by model

The M16 is the towed member: 32 tubes of 107 mm, a crew of six plus a squad commander, 1890 kg loaded in combat position and 8600 m with the M15 rocket. TAMNAVA and SUMADIJA are the modular self-propelled members with crews of three and INS/GPS orientation. TAMNAVA is documented at 40 km with 122 mm rockets and 70 km with 262 mm rockets at 38,000 kg; SUMADIJA at 70 km with the 262 mm Jerina 2 and 285 km with the 400 mm Jerina 1 at 35,000 kg.

Questions about this equipment

What rocket calibres do these launchers take?

The M16 takes 107 mm rockets in 32 tubes. TAMNAVA carries launch modules for 122 mm rockets (24 tubes per module) or 262 mm rockets (6 tubes per module). SUMADIJA carries two containers of either 400 mm Jerina 1 rockets (two per container) or 262 mm Jerina 2 rockets (six per container).

Which figures are stated for the self-propelled systems?

Both TAMNAVA and SUMADIJA are documented with an elevation range of 0° to 60°, a crew of three in the cab, INS and GPS orientation, automatic slope correction up to 5°, a 25 m remote firing distance and 120 s preparation for firing; system weights are 38,000 kg and 35,000 kg respectively.
